RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Because today, the Vernal Equinox, relates the Earth to the Sun in a special Spring moment (when the Sun’s most direct rays pass over the Equator, heading northbound), let’s talk about the Sun! We’ll be seeing more and more of it, after all, in the coming weeks and months as our days continue to last longer than nights.

The Sun “should” be at the maximum of its 11-year cycle right now. But sunspot activity has been a bit low lately. 2013 is supposed to be the year of Solar Max, so what is going on?

NASA says something unexpected, but not unprecedented, is happening to our Sun right now.  At least one leading forecaster expects the Sun will rebound with a double-peaked maximum later this year. Watch this ScienceCast for the expert investigation.
