RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - The University of Richmond is alerting students, parents and staff after several UR students contracted mumps.
"Symptoms take from 12-25 days after exposure to appear, so it is possible that other students will become ill after returning to campus," Vice President for Student Development Steve Bisese said in a letter to parents. "The vaccination [which nearly every student has received] is around 95 percent effective, which means that five percent of vaccinated people could still contract mumps if exposed."
Health officials advised parents and students to remain calm, regularly wash hands and stay away from others if they become sick, Bisese said.
Mumps symptoms include:
- fever
- headache
- swelling of the salivary glands
"Limiting the spread of mumps on campus is important to everyone," Bisese wrote. "State health officials and I are asking students who are ill or think they might be coming down sick not return to campus until they are well."
