RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – The strong cold front that passed through the area on Saturday sits well south of Virginia, keeping cold air in place here. This colder air has been reinforced by high pressure over upstate New York, funneling in a cold northeast flow at the surface into the Mid-Atlantic.  A series of disturbances will ride along the stalled cold front to our south, keeping occasional bouts of precipitation in the area.

Snowfall accumulations occurred in the higher elevations across far northwestern Virginia, near the I-81 corridor and along Skyline Drive Monday morning.  A winter storm warning was in effect for that area, but as of this update, is downgraded to a winter weather advisory as the precipitation ends.  Snowfall totals ranged 4″ to 8″ for areas above 700 feet, with a confirmed 8″ at Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park.  The lowest elevations in the warning area saw 2″ to 4″ in most spots.

A winter weather advisory is also still in effect for areas just south and east of the warning area, where snow and sleet could accumulate 1″ to 3″.  Even though the counties surrounding the Richmond Metro and in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula are not included in the advisory, a slushy dusting to about an inch of sleet and snow accumulation occurred, mainly on grassy surfaces, porches and untreated pavement.

Temperatures on Monday will reach the 40s during the late afternoon.  Far northwestern Virginia may hold onto some snow or a mix through the afternoon.

A cold front will sweep through around daybreak Tuesday, shutting off the threat for rain.
