(CNN) — President Barack Obama intends to nominate longtime diplomat Deborah K. Jones to become U.S. ambassador to Libya, the White House announced Wednesday.
That post was last held by Christopher Stevens, who was among four Americans killed in an attack on a diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, in September.
Jones was U.S. ambassador to Kuwait from 2008 to 2011. Before that, she held consulate and embassy posts in Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Syria, according to the White House.
Obama also announced Wednesday his intention to nominate James Knight as ambassador to Chad.
“It gives me great confidence that such dedicated and capable individuals have agreed to join this administration to serve the American people. I look forward to working with them in the months and years to come,” Obama said in a White House news release.
