PHOENIX (KPHO) — Who said lightning can’t strike twice, especially when it comes to a pair of Arizona Powerball winners?

Diane and Kerry Carmichael, a retired Tempe couple, won their second huge payout in 17 years when they claimed the $1 million second-place prize in Wednesday’s Powerball drawing.

The Carmichaels also won a $2.5 million jackpot in The Pick in December 1995.

“Good things come in threes. Two down, one to go,” Diane Carmichael told Arizona Lottery officials.

The Carmichaels’ win Wednesday was the 19th $1 million second prize Powerball winning in Arizona since $2 tickets were launched in 2012, a Lottery official said.

The new Powerball game has generated more than 500 second-prize wins nationwide, the official said.

The Carmichaels are still reaping a $125,000 annuity for their 1995 win, but it will expire in December 2014. The couple said they plan to consult with their financial adviser, but said they will “resist the urge to splurge.”

In December, a Fountain Hills man claimed the record-breaking $587.5 million Powerball jackpot after buying a ticket at the 4 Sons Food Store.
