RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – 9:40 a.m. UPDATE

The Winter Weather Advisory for south-central Virginia has been allowed to expire early as the winter mix of precipitation winds down there. In the Richmond Metro and locations along I-64 heading east of town, a winter mix with some heavy sleet continues to track eastward.

9:20 a.m. UPDATE

Heavy sleet mixed with some freezing rain and some snow will track east through the Richmond Metro over the next hour. Previous rounds of mixed morning precipitation have already created some slick spots, and this round of heavy sleet will only make those areas worse. Temperatures are at the freezing mark.

8:30 a.m. UPDATE

A light mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain is moving through much of central Virginia right now. Surface temperatures are just at the freezing mark in most of these locations, including Richmond, receiving the mix. Precipitation will be light to moderate at times, so slick spots should form while it continues over the next hour and a half.

7:50 a.m. UPDATE

Light sleet, flurries and freezing rain are reaching the ground in parts of central Virginia now. Temperatures at the surface are hovering around the freezing mark, so some slick spots may develop. A batch of light to moderate snow and sleet is reaching the ground west of I-95, and that mix is heading toward Richmond and Petersburg metro areas now. It will arrive within the hour.

However, dry air continues to limit our precipitation potential. I still expect this morning’s winter mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain to be very light in central Virginia. Before Noon, use caution on bridges, on/off ramps, steps and sidewalks, as they will be the first two have any icy problems.

PREVIOUS POST:
The radar is lit up this morning as precipitation is moving into our area from the southwest.  The air right above the ground is pretty dry early Friday morning, so most of the activity is evaporating before it reaches the surface. However, as of this posting before 5 a.m., snow is already beginning to coat the ground in southwest Virginia around Danville and South Boston.

As the atmosphere closer to the ground moistens up in the next few hours, a mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow will overspread the area.  Accumulations will be light, but with surface temperatures at or below freezing for several hours this morning, slick and icy conditions will be possible, especially well west of interstate 95.

Richmond Friday Temperature Forecast Graph

Surface temperatures across the southeastern half of the state, including Richmond, will warm above freezing around noon, with a cold rain continuing into the afternoon and evening.  Precipitation will be spotty and scattered at times. Another round of rain for central and eastern Virginia will pick up after sunset Friday and continue through mid-day Saturday. This cold rain will end from west to east Saturday early afternoon.
