RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)- A bill banning texting while driving got the green light in the General Assembly Tuesday.

Senators passed a plan that hands down a $250 fine to drivers who are caught texting. Any repeat offenses are worth a $500 fine.

Previously, officers would have to pull over drivers for another type of driving offense, and then cite the texting while driving as a secondary offense.

That could all change if Governor Bob McDonnell signs the bill into law, however the governor is not sold on the bill.

“He does continue to have concerns about beginning to list more specific activities that are prohibited while driving,” Tucker Martin, a spokesman for the governor, said to the Virginia Pilot.
