Strong high pressure will build over eastern Canada and the Northeast U.S. this week, driving shallow cold air into the Mid-Atlantic Thursday into Friday. The setup won’t be ideal for a significant ice storm, but light precip will arrive Friday morning from the west, overspreading sub-freezing surface air. The most likely area to see a light and possibly hazardous accretion of ice will be in the Shenandoah Valley, resulting in slick travel along HWY 81. It appears as though any icing in the metro would be negligible and short-lived, but any earlier arrival of precip in central Virginia will increase our threat.
