COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WTVR) – A suspicious package shut down the U.S. Probation and Parole Office and prompted evacuations in Colonial Heights Tuesday afternoon.

An official said a call came in around 12:30 p.m. of a report of a suspicious package at the federal building, which is located in the 3200 block of Jennick Drive. The office is near the Southpark Mall.

Officers blocked off the building, evacuated nearby businesses and called in Virginia State Police.

The FBI, a state bomb squad and AFT agents were on the scene.

State police X-rayed the package and determined it is not an explosive and is no danger to the community.

Officers said they do have a suspect, but that the person is not yet in custody.
