RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for early Tuesday in parts of southwest Virginia for a mix of snow, sleet & freezing rain.

A low pressure system currently in Kansas early Monday morning will track toward the Midwest into early Tuesday, pulling in moisture from the Gulf of Mexico through the Southeast U.S. to Virginia.

Temperatures at the time precipitation arrives early Tuesday morning in west-central and southwest Virginia will be at or below the freezing mark, which means that whatever falls will stick or create ice. Right now, it looks like what will fall will be a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain for that part of the state.

One to three inches of snow is expected to accumulate in this part of the state, mainly along and west of I-81. Minor ice accumulations are expected, too, which will make for slick, icy spots on untreated surfaces.

By the time moisture reaches central Virginia, temperatures will be rising above freezing and precipitation looks like it will be in the form of rain. Most of our rain in Richmond Tuesday will fall between Noon and 7 p.m., but light showers should move in as early as 9 a.m.

This rain event looks relatively light, with most locations poised to receive a tenth to two-tenths of an inch of rainfall.
