HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – A Henrico middle school teacher was honored as one of the best teachers in the United States. Holman Middle School teacher Nate Shotwell was named a 2013 recipient of the Edward C.Roy, Jr. Award for Excellence in K-8 Earth Science Teaching.

Shotwell uses “authentic problems” and inquiry-based learning in the earth sciences, according to a news release from Henrico County schools.

“Mr. Shotwell is a phenomenal educator. The passion he has for his students and science is evident as soon as you enter his classroom,” Brian Fellows, the principal at Holman, said in a statement. “This award confirms Mr. Shotwell’s commitment to the education profession and to the students of Holman Middle School and Henrico County Public Schools.”

The award, which honors the memory of Dr. Edward C. Roy, Jr., is a $2,500 prize for the teacher and a grant of up to $1,000.00.
