Freezing rain potential on Friday

The set-up for Friday morning has the potential to produce freezing rain across the Commonwealth.

Temperatures Wednesday and Thursday afternoons will be in the mid to upper 40s.  However, lows will drop below freezing Thursday night into Friday morning.

An approaching storm system will push warmer air into the region Thursday night and Friday.  This will cause the air right above the surface to be above freezing.

A large area of high pressure will be anchored over New England.  A clockwise flow around the high will push a cold northeasterly wind into our area.  This will keep surface temperatures at or below freezing through mid-morning.

As the liquid rain hits the cold surface, untreated surfaces will turn icy.  Enough cold air may remain in place for the precipitation to fall as snow in the mountains.blogsnap

This event is still many days away, but as of now, there is at least the potential for an icy morning.  We will continue to update the forecast the rest of the week.

Also of note, a similar set-up may occur again next Monday into Tuesday (February 25-26).
