CHARLOTTESVILLE Va. (WTVR) - University of Virginia health officials are closely watching students who may have been infected by meningitis.

Doctors said the type of bacteria one student has is not protected by the vaccine.

Plus, the infection is spread by nose or mouth, something easily done when students live and study in such close quarters.

In fact, Dr. James Turner, the UVA Student Health Deptartment Director, said those conditions "facilitate the process of passing respiratory secretions from one person to the next."

As a precaution, more than 40 students are on prescription antibiotics.

Many students said they're being particularly careful and are washing their hands and not sharing drinks or lip balms.
