HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - Southbound lanes of the Willey Bridge are now flowing smoothly following a Friday morning 'police situation' that stalled traffic during the morning rush hour.

The bridge connects the West End of Henrico at Parham Road to South Richmond near Stony Point Fashion Park.

Lt. Linda Toney with the Henrico County Police Department said officers were called to the bridge for a disabled vehicle just before 6:00 a.m.  When they arrived, the officers found a black SUV abandoned on the right shoulder of the bridge.

Detectives are now attempting to locate the owner of the SUV, Toney said.

"Maybe they went to go get gas, and they are just not with their vehicle.  But in a situation like this where it was left on the bridge, we are going to investigate further so that we locate the owner and make sure they're safe," Toney said.

Henrico Fire spokesman Jim Mellon said crews checked the river to see if someone jumped into the water.

No one has been found.

Toney said Henrico Police contacted Virginia State Police about using their helicopter during this investigation, but did not say whether it would be needed.
