RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) — A move to ban smoking inside a car if a child is present has failed at the General Assembly.

A House committee has tabled Senator Ralph Northam’s bill, which had passed the Senate.

The legislation would have outlawed smoking in cars, hitting drivers or others with a $100 fine if they were caught lighting up in that vehicle included a passenger younger than 15.

The Virginian Pilot reports that at least one member of the committee was concerned that if this bill became law, the next step could be banning smoking inside someone’s home.
