RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -- The Spirit of God Ministries Church closed its doors last summer after being considered unsafe by the city, but six months later, renovations to the historic church are beginning to make progress.

"The building is structurally sound, actually better than it has been in a long time," Pastor Jeffery Lee said, standing at the corner of Q and 27th Street in Richmond.

Since adding a new roof and removing the old siding, the congregation is hopeful  the church will reopen its doors this coming July.

As the project now moves into its next phase, workers will begin repainting the 1906  building and then replacing the windows. Once that is complete, the inside of the historic church will be refurbished.

"I think that what we are going to see is a fantastic reward at the end of the day," Kathleen Morgan with the Historic Richmond Foundation said.

A special building fund has been set up at Suntrust Bank for anyone who would like to make a donation to the Spirit of God Ministries.
