RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) — A Republican-led Senate committee at the General Assembly has approved a constitutional amendment that, if passed, would permit prayer at government meetings on government property and schools.

The amendment advanced by a party-line vote and now heads to the full Senate.

Critics, including the American Civil Liberties Union, said the measure would allow public entities to impose one religion over the other.

The group said that amounts to a violation of the First Amendment’s freedom of religion.
