HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR)–On Tuesday, VDOT presented the findings of a year-long study conducted on a two-mile stretch of Springfield Road, between Nuckols and Staples Mill Roads.

VDOT also presented three plans for making the stretch of road safer for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

The alternatives include straightening a curve at Echo lake and constructing a roundabout at Francistown Road. That $13 million proposal is expected to reduce crashes by 8 percent.

The second plan involves building a new Springfield Road between Linsey Lakes Drive and Francistown Road and building roundabouts at Francistown Road And Linsey Lakes Drive- an estimated $19 million proposal that VDOT says will reduce crashes by 22 percent.

The third plan would build a new Springfield Road and roundabouts, like plan 2, but through traffic would not be allowed on the existing Springfield Road at Echo Lake. That $18-million proposal would reduce crashes by 20 percent.

Over the past few years, a couple of fatal accidents have happened along Springfield Road, including the death of Danielle Bellio, who crashed while trying to avoid police, and her grandmother, who was killed a week later while visiting Danielle’s makeshift memorial.

VDOT will receive public feedback on the plans, by email or standard mail, until February 8th. Click herefor details on how to provide a comment.
