RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Light freezing rain and sleet continue to move eastward across Virginia this Monday morning, tapering off from west to east in our area from 10 a.m. to Noon Monday.

A freezing rain advisory was in effect for parts of central & western Virginia, including the Richmond metro area (see map below). At 9 a.m., the Advisory was allowed to expire early. However, pockets of freezing rain and sleet persist where surface temperatures linger at or below freezing.  A winter weather advisory remains in effect for northern and northwestern Virginia until 10 a.m., where sleet and snow has been mixing in with the rain this morning.

A warm layer of air above the surface will allow the precipitation to be liquid rain, but it will hit ground surfaces that are below freezing.  Any untreated surfaces will turn icy.

The precipitation amounts will not be heavy, but even a light amount of rain can make things very slick.

Temperatures should climb above freezing by mid to late morning.  Most of the precipitation will end by lunchtime. The afternoon/evening commute will be above freezing in the 40s with no precipitation falling.

Temperatures will remain above freezing overnight tonight, meaning black ice will not be a problem for your Tuesday morning commute.
