RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Richmond City Schools hosted the 23rd annual Martin Luther King Drill Meet at the Arthur Ashe Center to celebrate Saturday's National Day of Service.

High school ROTC's from as far away as New York and South Carolina filled the Arthur Ashe Center.  Despite the snowy conditions outside, as many as 1,200 students competed.

"It can be hard work, dedication, waking up at 5 in the morning to go down to the gym," one student said.

Another student said he learned a lot from participating in the ROTC.  "It teaches you precision, accuracy and listening skills and teamwork building."

The purpose of the event is to teach students lessons that go hand in hand with Martin Luther King's message.
