RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – The City of Richmond will open its Cold Weather Overflow Shelter tonight, January 15, and remain open this week through the 17. Overnight temperatures each of these nights will dip into the 30s, and Richmond opens its shelter anytime temperatures remain at or below 40 degrees.

Residents needing to utilize this shelter must check in first at the Commonwealth Catholic Charities Central Intake (CCCI) by 5 p.m. for intake and referral to the appropriate shelter. CCCI is located at the Freedom House Conrad Center, 1400 Oliver Hill Way, next to the Richmond Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court and the Richmond City Jail.

Qualifying residents will be sent from CCCI to the City’s shelter at Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church, 14 West Duval Street, or to another appropriate shelter in town. The City’s shelter opens at 7 p.m. and closes the following morning at 6 a.m. Food will not be provided and pets are not allowed.

If you or someone you know needs emergency assistance with heating, call the Fuel Line at 804-646-7046. DSS also provides emergency assistance with gas and electric disconnection notices for residents who qualify.  If there is not an immediate need over the next few nights, but there is a concern with the primary heating source function, residents can apply for Crisis Assistance from Richmond City’s Department of Social Services (DSS). Submit an application between now and March 15 at 900 East Marshall Street, Monday through Friday; from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Senior Connections assists our City’s elderly or residents with disabilities. Call 804-343-3000, Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for information.
