MOSCOW (WTVR) – New adoption laws that ban Americans from adopting Russian children have brought more than 20,000 protesters to the streets.

Protesters marched and carried pictures of Russian lawmakers who voted in favor of the law.  Leaders who opposed the law also participated in the protest.

The U.S. State Department says Americans adopted close to a thousand Russian children last year.

The new law will take in effect in 2014.  The Huffington Post says the law was created in response to a U.S. law that targeted Russians accused of human rights abuses.  The law was also created in part that 60,000 Russian children were adopted in the last 20 years, with 19 children dead.
