RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Richmond ended up a little more than seven inches below normal for our 2012 precipitation. It was also our hottest year on record (scroll to the bottom of this story for more). We’re still waiting for the statewide climate summary, but we already know how that set the stage for our first Drought Update of 2013. The Moderate Drought (D1) area has grown from non-existent in early 2012 to cover nearly half of the Commonwealth. Most of the deterioration occurred in the Fall and early Winter, where you can see the D1 area grow from 11% of the state at the beginning of October to 44% at the New Year.
The forecast for our region shows some improvement through the rest of Winter.
So far this season, Richmond International Airport has reported no snowfall.
