CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WTVR) -- Thousands of stuffed animals donated for the youngest victims of Hurricane Sandy will soon be headed to New York.

The Red Cross Wednesday helped pack up all the teddy bears that 9-year-old Lizzy Kandris has been collecting since October.

Volunteers will take the stuffed animals up north on Thursday after the animals spent the last few months in storage since the Kandris family did not have a way to get them to the victims.

“She wanted to do something but she was too little, so she came up with a stuffed animal drive to help the kids,” Eve Kandris, Lizzy’s mother, told CBS 6 News senior reporter Wayne Covil in December.

Once the girl started collecting the animals, the effort spread and people donated from near and far. By Christmas arrived, animals had come in from around the country, filling nearly 100 boxes with 2,800 stuffed animals in every shape, size and color.
