RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) — Convicted felons may soon get their voting rights restored faster.

State Senator Chap Petersen is proposing legislation, that if passed, would allow Virginians who have previously been convicted of a felony to receive their voting rights automatically after they finish their sentence.

Currently, the governor has to restore those rights.

The General Assembly will take up the proposal during next month’s session.
