(CNN) — Lucky for “Les Misérables,” it seems moviegoers were in the mood for music this Christmas.

Tom Hooper’s adaptation of the Broadway musical grossed about $17.5 million at the box office, beating other new releases such as “Django Unchained” and “Parental Guidance,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Quentin Tarantino’s “Django,” which has received rave reviews from movie critics, despite Spike Lee’s disapproval, earned at least $14 million. As The Hollywood Reporter points out, “Django” had the biggest Christmas Day opening for an R-rated film to date.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” nabbed third place with $10.8 million, while the Billy Crystal- and Bette Midler-starrer “Parental Guidance” came in fourth, earning about $7 million.
