RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)-- One man is dead from self-inflicted gunshot wounds after a seven hour stand-off with police.

Several streets were closed off in the city for hours as police as investigators tried to end what started as a domestic disturbance.

Police and SWAT teams were called to a home west of the Boulevard, in the Museum District, in the 3200 block of Hanover Avenue.

They used the intercom system to speak to an individual to come outside, but he remained in the house.

The area was cleared by police, with local residents finding themselves quickly rushing away from their homes with hands in the air.

The scene began around 7:30 p.m. with a domestic situation.

Police said that the girlfriend left and then received a picture of the man with a gun to his head. Specialized units were called in to attempt to bring a peaceful conclusion to the event.

The chief of police was on hand, along with a very large police presence.

Just around 1 a.m., two shots were fired. Then after 1:30 a.m., four more shots fired.
