TIMELINE: Connecticut elementary school shooting updates

  • 20 children, six adults and the shooter are dead after shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, on Friday morning
  • Three law enforcement officials say Adam Lanza was the shooter, and that he died apparently by his own hand
  • Suspect’s mother, Nancy Lanza, was found dead in the suspect’s home in Newtown, law enforcement source says
  • Ryan Lanza, older brother of Adam Lanza, questioned by police but not labeled a suspect,  three law enforcement officials say

SATURDAY 6:15 p.m. Family statement released. “On behalf of Nancy’s mother and siblings, we reach out to the community of Newtown and express our heartfelt sorrow for the loss of innocence that has affected so many,” the statement said, which was read by Rockingham County, New Hampshire, Sheriff Michael Downing.

SATURDAY 6:14 p.m. CNN reports that police refute earlier reports that there had been altercations between Lanza and adults at the school. 

SATURDAY 3:55 p.m. Complete victim list released.

SATURDAY 1:11 p.m. Investigators have been told that alleged Connecticut school shooter Adam Lanza had some sort of altercation with some people at the school a few days before the killings, according to a law enforcement official.

SATURDAY: 11:59 a.m. CNN reports that Adam Lanza, the alleged Connecticut school massacre shooter, tried to buy a gun in the area Tuesday before the shooting, a law enforcement source said.

SATURDAY 10:16 a.m. All victims in shooting identified. 

SATURDAY 8:44 a.m. CNN reports that the suspect in the Connecticut school shooting may have had access to at least five guns.

SATURDAY 12:53 a.m. CNN’s Susan Candiotti reports suspected shooter Adam Lanza had a form of autism, according to a law enforcement official, who spoke under condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the investigation. Family members told the officer this info.

10:54 p.m. CBS reports, on the CBS Newtown special that while it has been believed all day that Nancy Lanza was a teacher at Sandy Hook elementary, there are now questions arising about said information. More details coming. 

9ish p.m.  As tragic details unfold all day, with many corrections, one thing had remained consistent–that the mother of the suspected shooter was a teacher. Now,Associated Press is reporting that “At least one parent said Lanza’s mother was a substitute teacher there. But her name did not appear on a staff list. And the law enforcement official said investigators were unable to establish any connection so far between her and the school.”

7:17 p.m. Hundreds attend vigil in Hartfords Bushnell park for a vigil for Newtown. 

6:51 p.m. CNN: A law enforcement official familiar with the investigation says the three guns found at the shooting site were legally purchased by Nancy Lanza, the mother of the suspect in the shooting.

6:45 p.m. CNN: Three U.S. law enforcement officials, from different agencies, separately tonight identified the suspected shooter as Adam Lanza, contrary to what investigators had said previously.

6:44 p.m. Update on Ryan Lanza, the older brother of suspected shooter. He is not listed as a suspect CNN reports, but he has not been released either. The father was also taken in for questioning.

5:14 p.m. CNN reports that the mother of the suspected shooter, Nancy Lanza,  was found dead in her son’s residence in Newtown. Original mixed reports said she was found in the school.

5:01 p.m. CNN reports that law enforcement officials are not prepared to identify the shooter right now, Connecticut State PoliceLt. J. Paul Vance said in a press conference.

4:54 p.m. CNN reports that “We are now being told there was no body found in the Hoboken, New Jersey, home as had been previously reported.” Instead, a suspect was taken from the home.

4:23 p.m. CNN reports that Connecticut police have searched the suspected gunman’s home and place of employment in the wake of Friday’s mass shooting, Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.

4:08 p.m. CBS reports that Adam Lanza is actually the deceased shooter and that Ryan Lanza is the older brother, age 24.

3:52 p.m. Confusion on shooter’s identity. Later, news outlets reported that this is because Ryan Lanza had his brother’s identification on his person. 

3:30 p.m. Governor Malloy talks about tragedy.

2:50 p.m. Speaker John Boehner says that the flags at the U.S. Capitol will be lowered.

2:27 p.m. Hartford Courant reports that the shooter’s parent was found dead in New Jersey. (LATER REPORTED TO BE NOT TRUE)

2:26 p.m. CBS confirms Lanza’s mother was a teacher and that many of the victim’s were her students.

2:00 p.m. CNN reports that the suspect is Ryan Lanza.

1:51 p.m. CNN reports that the shooter is 20-years-old. Shortly after that CNN reports the shooter had a connection with the school.

1:45 p.m. CNN reports that a male is being questioned, but is not called a suspect.

1:44 p.m. Scene is secure.

1: 41 p.m. Press conference begins.

1:21 p.m. CBS reports that official have a potential second shooter in custody.

12:52 p.m.  Death toll rises. Associated Press reports that there are 27 known fatalities and 18 are children.

12:44 p.m. Scene hectic. Newspaper reports that one entire classroom is unaccounted for outside the school. Full story: cour.at/SZ8kNZ

12:36 p.m. Number of fatalities grows. The Hartford Courant reports that 20 shot, multiple dead.

12:31 p.m. Governor Dannell Malloy arrives at Sandy Hook School.

12:05 p.m. CNN reports that the shooter’s body is in a classroom.

12 p.m. All area schools on lockdown.

11:54 a.m. Danbury Hospital confirms they are treating victims and noted the hospital was on lockdown, out of precaution.

11:53 a.m. Rep. John Frey tweets that his sister was driving to Sandy Hook, came upon some 1st graders running from school. She took them to Police Dept. Kids were shaken. Heartbreaking

11:12 a.m.  The Hartford Courant, citing police, said an unspecified number of people had been shot. The nature of their injuries was unclear, the newspaper said. But it cited police in saying one person had “numerous gunshot wounds.”

11:11 a.m. Some parents leave Sandy Hook firehouse with kids. Other parents having a hard time getting to school, getting in touch with kids, and getting info.

10:30 a.m. CBS reports that Jay Carney says Pres Obama notified at 1030 a.m. by Homeland Security advisor John Brennan of shootings at school in Newtown, CT.

10:02 a.m. There is confirmation of shooting at elementary school in Newtown.

9:55 a.m. One of first tweets about shooting goes out, from breaking news editor of Hartford Courant. “Police are at an incident on Dickinson Drive in Newtown – details are sketchy but Sandy Hook Elementary is on the same street.” https://twitter.com/StephenBus

9:47 a.m. Hartford Courant reports that state police received the call on Newtown shooting, call of numerous shots fired near room number nine. https://twitter.com/StephenBus

9:35 a.m. CNN reports that a parent said the shooting began at 9:35 a.m.  There was a “pop pop pop” in the hall outside the room. Three people went out of the room into the hall where the sounds had come from.

“Only one person came back,” we were told. The witness told CNN that she then called 911. She said she never saw the shooter but she later was escorted outside the room past two bodies lying in blood.
