FAYETTEVILLE, NC (WTVR) —  New details are emerging about the arrest of a Virginia sex offender who has been on the run from Hanover County authorities.

Jason Akers was arrested Monday morning by police in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He is being held without bond in the Cumberland County Detention Center pending arraignment, according to Sergeant Chris R. Whitley with the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

Whitley said the sheriff’s office got a tip Monday evening about Akers from a citizen who found learned the sex offender had gone missing on television.

That tip led investigators in Fayetteville to the vehicle the suspect was driving, according to Gavin MacRoberts with Fayettville police.

Officer searched Tuesday and again on Wednesday after they found evidence that  the  Akers was still in the area.

After canvassing the area, Gavin MacRoberts said officers spotted and captured Akers near the Cape Fear River around 9:15 a.m.

Akers is wanted by the Virginia State Police for two felony counts of failing to comply with sex offender registry requirements.

In 2006, Akers was convicted in Henrico County of rape and forcible sodomy of a minor, according to the Virginia State Police sex offender website.
