RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -- Traffic on I-95 in Richmond was at a standstill Wednesday morning, as all lanes but one were closed. The result of a metal plate shifting over the Robinhood Road Bridge.
Several cars were damaged as a result of the plate, VDOT says the contractor will pay.
"The constant back ups, the constant delays , it is frustrating," David Humphries, a Richmond driver, said.
Hours later, I-95 was backed-up again because of an accident.
It made us wonder why is the I-95 Bridge restoration project affecting our commute times so much?
"It may seem like Interstate 95 bridges project has a lot of problems but you have to keep in mind this is one of the most heavily traveled piece of road on the east coast," Dawn Eischen, a VDOT spokesperson, told CBS 6.
The contractor will not be charged for the delays caused this morning as they worked throughout the day to fix the metal plate issue.
But the contractor has been fined in the past, at least three times according to VDOT.
Fines are based off of how much traffic is affected, usually ranging in the tens of thousands of dollars.
"We are talking with them to make sure this doesn't happen again," Eischen said.
Over 158 accidents has occurred over the stretch of road effected most by the bridge restoration project according to State Police.
The bridge restoration project is not expected to be completed until the fall of 2014.
