COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WTVR)–An accident temporarily closed all but the left lane of Interstate 95 northbound in Colonial Heights.

The interstate was closed at Temple Avenue, mile marker 54.

VDOT encourages anyone traveling to use Interstate 295, and for local traffic to use Route 1 north to bypass the incident. Major delays are expected said VDOT.

Sgt. Thomas Molnar, with the Virginia State Police, said that they are investigating a single-vehicle crash. Police responded at 4:13 p.m. Sunday.

All lanes of 95 were temporarily closed to allow med-flight to land on the northbound side of 95.

Molnar said the crash occurred when the driver of a sport utility vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway. The vehicle crossed back across all southbound lanes and struck the jersey wall.

The adult male driver, who was wearing his safety belt, suffered serious non-life threatening injuries and was flown by med-flight to VCU Medical Center.

The crash remains under investigation.
