WAVERLY, Va. (WTVR) - It’s been exactly a week since an officer involved shooting that happened Thanksgiving Day.

And the suspect’s mother says she’s still waiting for answers.

“Nobody has told me anything,” said Yvonne Howard.  The concerned mom told CBS 6 that her son Alkeim came by the house last Wednesday night extremely upset after she says Alkeim got into an argument with his girlfriend.

Howard says she begged her son to stay away from the apartment that the two shared on New Street, fearing what may happen.

“He said okay mom I love you and I’m gone.  And he walked on away,” said Howard.

Howard says Alkeim left the house.  Not soon after, she says she heard an ambulance driving near her home.  But didn’t think anything of it, until she got a call that morning about a 30-year-old man was shot.

Howard’s son is recovering at VCU Medical Center and she’s worried about his welfare.

“Won't let me see him, won't let me talk to him,” she said. “They won't give him a message for me.”

“I don't know if he's able to respond or talk,” said Howard.. She has been told that he is in stable condition.

“And I done talk to 15 to 20 people and everybody is saying the same exact thing."
Virginia State Police continue to investigate the situation.

Around 1:30 a.m. Thanksgiving Day, a second call came in from the same address. This time when police responded they found the male suspect and tried to arrest him, but police said he refused and a struggle ensued.

An officer then shot the suspect inside the home. He was transported to the VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

“It just sounded like a boom…I knew somebody was shot,” said neighbor Cobie Drew, Jr.

”As far as him and her fighting and arguing, I never heard it before you know.”
Kenneth Manning, who grew up in this neighborhood, owns a convenience store nearby. He said that the neighborhood is busy, but there is not usually violence.
At this time police can’t say if the suspect had a weapon.

Waverly police department’s spokesperson, Valerie Ricks tells CBS 6, State police are handling the investigation that involved one of their officers and a Sussex County Deputy.

A State police spokesperson says they could wrap up this investigation sometime next week.
