RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling put speculation to rest Thursday morning, stating he would not run for governor as an Independent party candidate.

Bolling announced Wednesday he would suspend his gubernatorial candidacy. During a Thursday press briefing, the Republican leader said he would not endorse another gubernatorial candidate.

Bolling said he suspended his candidacy because he felt he could not win the party's nomination through the party convention process. The convention would have pitted Bolling against Republican Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.

"It would have been hand to hand combat," Bolling said about the prospects of a convention.

He told reporters he could have won a primary against Cuccinelli.

As for the future, Bolling said he intended to work as an "independent voice in politics," and would keep his options open.
