SHORT PUMP, Va. (WTVR) - Henrico Fire crews rescued a construction worker who fell down an elevator shaft in Short Pump. The worker suffered "at least a fractured leg,” Henrico Fire spokesman Capt. Jim Mellon said.

The worker, Mellon said, was working on a ladder and fell 20 feet down the shaft. He landed on the top of an elevator. He was able to communicate with rescue crews.

A Heavy Tactical Rescue team responded to the scene and lowered team members down into the shaft to treat the worker's injuries. The crews then lifted the worker to the building roof to complete the rescue, Mellon said.

The patient was immobilized and pain management deployed before the victim was removed from the shaft.

The location of the incident is the ACAC Fitness and Wellness Center construction site, near the Children's Museum of Richmond and Whole Foods in West Broad Village.

Capt. Mellon said that the worker has been taken to VCU Medical for treatment and that the extent of his injuries are unknown at this time.
