NEWTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWMT) - Deputies in Michigan think a mobile meth lab may have caused a vehicle explosion that captured on dash cam video.

Deputy Tim Howell was blown back last Friday night when a minivan exploded on B Drive in Newtown Township in Calhoun County.

Deputy Howell, who had driven up and found the van burning, was walking towards the van to see if anyone was inside when the explosion took place. He was not injured.

The couple inside the van managed to get out and were not seriously injured. Newton Township Fire Chief Mike Wilson says the couple's story did not add up.

“One of the occupants of the vehicle said they dropped a cigarette in the vehicle it was on fire and caught fire a different time they called it an accident but there was no damage,” said Wilson.

Investigators say evidence gathered at the scene leads them to believe it was possibly a mobile meth lab.

The couple has not been arrested at this point as the investigation continues
