RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Some folks avoided the Black Friday lines for TVs and DVDs and went directly to Central Virginia ABC stores.

The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) provided shoppers with deep discounts on liquor for Black Friday.

In fact, certain items were marked down as much as 50 percent, though many of the items were being phased out anyway. Plus, every customer that spent more than $50 got 10 percent off their purchase. The deals lasted until 3 p.m.

Stock flew off the shelf at the ABC Store in the Willow Lawn Shopping Center.

It is one of five statewide that opened up at 7 a.m., and Black Friday shoppers were ready and waiting.

“Before we opened, the line went past two stores outside,” Willow Lawn ABC Store Manager Thomas Khan said.

It's the second straight year ABC has offered liquor discounts on Black Friday.

Last year, ABC made about $3 million in revenue on Black Friday, which was about $400,000 more than the same day the previous year.

If the number of customers flooding into the Willow Lawn ABC store is any indication, this year will prove a financial success again.

“The minute we opened we had people down every isle,” Khan said.

Some shoppers saw the deals posted online.

Evan Bruhm said he decided to hit the store because he had to stock up at 10-percent off for the holidays anyway.

At the ABC store off Pump Road near Short Pump, store employees got in a shipment of 600 cases worth of liquor Friday morning.

Employees said they expect the store will sell about 200 cases Friday, way higher than a normal day.

“I saved $10 today,” Margaret Duckworth said after checking out at the Pump Rd. store.

She is on her way home to enjoy her savings, and hopes ABC will keep the discounts on Black Friday going.

“It's one of my best Black Friday splurges today, let me tell you,” she said.
