TEXAS (WTVR)--Two people are confirmed dead and dozens were hurt, several critically, after an estimated 100 vehicles collided in the fog at about 8 a.m. Thanksgiving Day on Interstate 10 near between Beaumont and Houston.

Texas DPS reopened I-10 West at about noon but I-10 East will remain closed for most of the day.

The two who were killed were in an SUV crushed by a tractor trailer.

Acadian Ambulance spokeswoman Denise Richter says their crews have transported at least 51 patients to area hospitals. She said at least eight were critically hurt.

Multiple ambulance crews responded and transported patients to area hospitals.

Drivers were forced to take Highway 124, Highway 73 and Highway 90 as alternate routes.

Chief Charles Sonnier of the Labelle-Fannett Volunteer Fire Department says the vehicles involved in the accidents include seven tractor trailers that collided on the eastbound side. Two are carrying hazardous materials but they aren't leaking, according to Chief Sonnier.

He said firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to cut people out of a car and pickup truck.
