COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WTVR) – The University of Maryland has approved a plan to leave the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and move to the Big Ten conference.

The Washington Post reported Sunday that Maryland was ready to end its 59-year affiliation with the ACC.

WJZ-TV reported that the decision to stay in the ACC or move to the Big Ten came down to tradition versus money.

The move comes after the school was forced to ax seven sports programs because of budget concerns. In fact, some athletic programs were in debt to the tune of $5 million a year.
