RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Hundreds of volunteers spent their Sunday preparing hundreds of pounds of food to be sent up north to the people still recovering from Sandy. An army of volunteers packed holiday meals for hundreds still feeling the impact of the superstorm.

By Sunday evening, some of the areas hardest hit - Rockaway, Breezy Point - had 12,000 coolers packed with chicken, stuffing, milk, mash potatoes; things to make their holidays better.

There were around 300 volunteers working at a feverish pace to pack the Thanksgiving meals for those hit hard. And amongst those working hard was 11-year-old Ethan Smith.

“It means a lot to me and I bet it means a lot to the people of New York and New Jersey,” said Smith.

For some of the dedicated men and women volunteering, this isn't their first storm. Jerry Silva just returned from the disaster zone Saturday night.

He said the destruction is eerily similar to another historic hurricane

"I went through Katrina...Sandy was close to it,” Silva said.
