Turns out those icky, graphic cigarette warning labels work

(CBS) – A new study finds graphic warning labels on cigarettes are effective.
The labels are used in 40 foreign countries.

Doctors at the Medical University of South Carolina tested them on 1,000 American smokers.

Most smokers said the pictures made them think about quitting more than current print warnings.

The FDA planned to use the labels in this country but earlier this year a federal court blocked the warnings. The FDA said it wanted more evidence that the labels work.
