RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Senator-elect Tim Kaine addressed the media for the first time since Tuesday’s win over former Senator George Allen. While Kaine spoke about the win and his plans moving forward, he also addressed the plans of his soon-to-be Senate partner, Sen. Mark Warner.

In an interview with Bill Fitzgerald last month, Warner would not rule out the possibility he’d leave the U.S. Senate to run for Virginia governor in 2013. On Wednesday, PilotOnline.com reported Warner would make a decision “by Thanksgiving.”

Warner served as Virginia governor from 2002 – 2006.

Kaine said he hoped his fellow Democrat would stay in Washington.

“Mark will do what he thinks is the best thing to do for the Commonwealth and the country,” Kaine said. “I really want Mark to stay in the Senate. Mark is doing some really important work.”

Kaine added that Warner would "make his own decision."

A recent Washington Post poll showed Warner would have more support than any of announced gubernatorial candidates.
