RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - CBS projects a winner in the nail-biting U.S. Senate race between two former state governors that everyone has watched so closely.

Former governor and DNC chairman Tim Kaine has been declared the winner by CBS network.

It was an extremely close race and the race was called with 81 percent of the precincts reporting.  The precincts that remained were predicted to be strong Kaine supporters, said political analyst Dr. Bob Holsworth.

The race was called the most expensive Senate race in the country, with more than $80-million spent.

Former GOP Sen. George Allen suffered a narrow defeat six years ago, to Jim Webb, who retired from the position after six years.

Kaine hoped to keep the seat in Democratic control.

The two candidates met four times on stage to debate and establish their policies.

The most recent polling had showed Kaine with a slight edge over Allen.
