WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WTVR) - A Williamsburg family welcomes their son home, one year after he was injured in Afghanistan.

First Lt. Rafael Chico-Lugo lost part of his leg after stepping on an explosive device. Since then, he's undergone more than a dozen surgeries and is still learning to walk again.

So his family says seeing him walk through the airport was the best gift they could ever get.

"This is the biggest happiness I can ever find in my life right now. That's all I wanted, to see him walk. To see him smiling. To see him laughing," says Chico-Lugo's father.

Chico-Lugo now has a prosthetic leg, but still wants to return to the military. He says he loves his job as a soldier and hopes to continue to do it.
