RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Sandy's impacts were not limited to heavy rain, storm surge, flooding, damaging wind gusts, and snow. Sandy also caused an abrupt end to the Fall foliage season in far western and southwestern Virginia, West Virginia, part of Maryland, and locations a little farther north that were not quite finished with their peak colors.

As I mentioned, Sandy brought both wind and snow, and those are the two primary reasons why the Fall foliage season is over to our west. But leaf drop increased everywhere as a result of the windy and gusty conditions across the Commonwealth.

Compare where we are now with our Fall colors to the average peak time-frame and you'll see how the season ended early for western Virginia by already reaching past-peak conditions about a week earlier than average.
