RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)--In Richmond’s Fan District, the Halloween decor is already set in place to give children a little spook, but now, the adults are preparing for a real-life monster, Hurricane Sandy, still churning in the Atlantic.

“I hear it's kind of a Frankenstorm,” says Richmond resident, Jen Moody.

She is worried about what the so-called Frankenstorm will do to her home, which sits on a street lined with large trees. Moody is new on the block, so, her neighbors are sending her a warning.

Bill Wagner says Moody should expect to at least lose power. “It seems like it's a fairly regular occurrence, " says Wagner.  He says memories of last year's Hurricane Irene, are now churning in his head.  That's why Wagner tells us, he's already cleaned out his gutters and checked for dead trees, hoping to stave off any damage or loss of power.

“We're going to have power outages,” says David Botkins with Dominion Virginia Power. He tells us, realistically, some residents will lose power, but, Dominion is hoping it won't be as bad as Hurricane Irene, when many of you had to do without electricity for days.

"We learn something from every event we go through," says Botkins. "We drill, we test our technology, our people," says Botkins.

“We know we're going to have some impact in Virginia,” says Bob Spieldenner with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. Spieldenner tells us they too learned from Irene and have already put many state agencies on standby.

The prep doesn’t just stop with the state and Dominion. Even Navy bases throughout the Commonwealth are securing objects that could be blown away.
