RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – The Internal Revenue Service wants taxpayers to be on the lookout for copycat websites being used in an attempt to steal tax information.

The IRS says inputting information on the websites could make taxpayers victims of identity theft or worse.

According to the IRS the new tax scam uses a website that mimics the IRS e-Services online registration page.

The actual IRS e-Services page offers web-based products for tax preparers, not the general public. The phony web page looks almost identical to the real one.

The IRS reminds taxpayers, its website is http://www.IRS.gov. If the site ends in .com, .net or any other destination, it is not the official website.
