RICHMOND (WTVR) – On Election Day you’ll see a state measure that protects the property rights of individuals,  but limits what localities can do with land it does not own.

Governor Bob McDonnell told radio listeners on ‘Ask the Governor’ that he supports the amendment because it more clearly defines the conditions under which the government can take your property and what the gist compensation means.

On Monday, the Richmond City Council unanimously passed a resolution to express its opposition to the amendment that limits a locality or states right to exercise the power of eminent domain.

In May, we profiled a Chesterfield man who could lose some of his farm land so Chesterfield County can build a water line along Route 360. He said he refused the county’s $6,400 offer for the property. He added the county told him he would be forced to relinquish the property under the laws of eminent domain.
