A lot has changed in the tropics over the past 24 hours, and we’ve had two new systems receive designations today. Tropical Depression Eighteen formed this morning, and quickly became Tropical Storm Sandy.
Sandy is located in the southern Caribbean, and will move north over the next few days, directly affecting Jamaica, Cuba, and the Bahamas.
The system will then continue north and will be under increasing influence from the westerlies and a strong trough along the eastern half of the U.S.
It appears as though Sandy will remain well offshore, with little direct influence on Virginia, other than increased surf, high clouds, and a northeast breeze. Much can change, however, so we’ll continue to update you on Sandy’s progress and potential impact to our region.
Tropical Depression Nineteen formed this afternoon, and should become Tropical Storm Tony soon, but will remain over the open waters of the central Atlantic, not affecting the U.S.
