Forget Big Bird, ‘Binders Full of Women’ ruffles even more feathers

An odd remark from last night’s presidential debate is getting a lot of play today.

In the debate, Mitt Romney said while governor of Massachusetts, women’s groups gave him “binders full of women” who were qualified to serve in his cabinet.

The phrase became an Internet sensation on Twitter and elsewhere in record time.

President Obama made a passing reference to it while campaigning in Mount Vernon, Iowa today.  A Democratic super PAC even seized on the phrase and  bought the Internet domain name “bindersfullofwomen.com” less than two minutes after the phrase came out of Romney’s mouth.

By this morning, the super PAC had a Tumblr-powered website up and running, featuring critical news articles and policy briefs about Romney’s stance on women’s issues.

But the Tumblr of the day was the creation of Veronica De Souza, whose name has been on the lips of many today (she even had job offers) and who launched the most successful presidential internet meme so far in history.

The Big Bird meme was a spin-off from the first debate, and “Binders Full of Women,” launched from the second. There is still one more presidential debate left, on Oct. 22 at Lynn University in Florida.

Below are a collection of some of the picture submissions, but you can find more on at http://bindersfullofwomen.tumblr.com/

Mitt Romney used an awkwardly worded expression to capture his commitment to gender diversity and suddenly an internet meme was let loose. Twitter user @HeyVeronica was responsible for the Tumblr site: http://bindersfullofwomen.tumblr.com/
