DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - As the holiday season approaches, online retailer Amazon announced Tuesdayit is hiring 50,000 seasonal workers for its 40 warehouses across the nation.

The open positions are good news for some since two Amazon distribution centers recently opened in Central Virginia.

In fact, officials said more than 1,000 workers will be hired at the fulfillment center in Chesterfield County.  And with the extra seasonal workers, Chesterfield could see another 1,000 hired for October through January.

Additionally, the Amazon facility in Dinwiddie County is expected to hire about 350 employees.

Dinwiddie County Administrator Kevin Massengill said over 200 seasonal employees will also likely be added at the county's fulfillment center.

Experts said the seasonal work with Amazon could be a boon for the local economy since the jobs pay better than some other seasonal positions.

"Being able to get a job making $10.50 to $11 an hour in Dinwiddie County is extremely competitive," Massengill said.

And some of those seasonal hires might end up with a permanent position.
